The Samanea Saman rain tree belongs to the acacia family and is also known by many other names, such as Suar, Monkeywood and Mungur. It is called different names depending on the country. The rain tree originally comes from Central and South America. Over time, it has also spread to many parts of Asia. The warm climate and sufficient rainfall in northern Thailand and Indonesia provide ideal conditions for the growth of the rain tree.

‌The name rain tree probably comes from the fact that the tree folds up its leaves when it rains so that the rainwater can fall freely through the crown to the roots and utilise the rain for its growth. With a growth rate of approx. 1.5 metres per year, the rain tree is considered a fast-growing tree species.

‌The rain tree is easily recognised by its characteristic crown. If the tree grows free-standing, it can reach a height of up to 24 metres, whereby the diameter of the tree crown is larger than the height of the tree.

‌This is why the rain tree is often used to provide shade in gardens or along roads. Suar wood is ideal for making table tops from a single piece of wood.

‌Suar wood has a beautiful and contrasting grain. The colour is a rich brown. The colour varies from tree to tree and is therefore ideal for making unique tables. Each table is unique.
